Melbourne in One Day

Luisa Sanchez Luisa Sanchez Aug 17, 2026 5 min read

Short on time in Melbourne? Follow a compact route through Queen Victoria Market, the city’s laneways, Federation Square, the arts precinct, and Southbank. Much of the route is walkable or within the Free Tram Zone, while ACMI and NGV offer free general entry and Melbourne Skydeck provides an optional paid viewpoint.

Maybe you’ve arrived in Melbourne early, you’re leaving tonight, or you haven’t booked a hotel. That’s great for the budget. Not so great for the suitcase currently trying to dislocate your shoulder.

Spending one day in Melbourne works best when you keep the route compact and your hands free. Make sure to store your luggage near Southern Cross Station. Be My Guest provides luggage storage at Shop 3/200 Spencer Street, opposite the station. Its published opening hours are 9am to 6pm. Then, use this itinerary to cover markets, laneways, art, river views, and an epic food trip.

Your Melbourne Itinerary

9.30am: Have breakfast at Queen Victoria Market

Queen Victoria Market

Once you’ve stored your luggage, head to Queen Victoria Market. It’s a good place to find breakfast, fresh produce, deli food, and snacks for later.

Its regular daytime trading days are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It’s normally closed on Monday and Wednesday, while speciality shopping opens at 9am on trading days. Check the official market hours before going. If it’s closed, choose a café in the CBD instead.

You’ll want to spend about an hour at the market. Browse, eat, and don’t forget to go on a shopping expedition.

10.30am: Walk through Melbourne’s arcades and laneways

Hosier Lane

From the market, make your way towards the historic shopping arcades and central laneways. A sensible route takes in Royal Arcade, Block Arcade, Degraves Street, and Hosier Lane before finishing at Flinders Street Station.

Don’t rush this part. Look above the shopfronts, peek into the smaller lanes, and take time to notice the city’s mix of old buildings, independent shops, and street art.

Hosier Lane is known for its painted walls, but the work changes regularly. For other well-known street art spots when you visit Melbourne, check out AC/DC Lane and Duckboard Place.

From Hosier Lane, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square are only a short walk away.

Noon: Choose one stop at Federation Square

Federation Square

Federation Square contains enough culture to derail your timetable, so choose one attraction rather than attempting to see everything.

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is the most convenient option because it’s located at Federation Square. It’s perfect for visitors interested in film, television, video games, and digital culture. General entry is free, although some exhibitions and events require tickets. The museum is normally open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Alternatively, spend a little time around Federation Square itself. Check what’s happening in the square, admire the architecture, or simply watch Melbourne flow past. It’s excellent people-watching territory.

1pm: Stop for lunch in the CBD

Flinders Lane

Keep lunch close to the route. Flinders Lane is the most convenient option if you want to continue directly towards the river. Chinatown is a worthwhile detour if dumplings, noodles, or a quick rice dish sound better than a long sit-down meal.

2pm: Cross the Yarra for art or gardens

Royal Botanic Gardens

Walk across Princes Bridge towards Melbourne’s arts precinct. From here, choose between an indoor cultural stop and some outdoor space.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) presents its international collection at NGV International on St Kilda Road, the most convenient major gallery on this route. Entry to its permanent collection is free, although major temporary exhibitions may be ticketed. The gallery is normally open daily from 10am to 5pm. Try to give yourself 60 to 90 minutes here.

Alternatively, skip the gallery and continue south towards Royal Botanic Gardens for an outdoor visit if the weather is great.

4pm: Walk through Southbank and see the skyline

Melbourne Skydeck

Finish your sightseeing with a stroll along Southbank Promenade. You’ll get river views, bridges, public art, and plenty of places to stop for a drink. For a higher viewpoint, Melbourne Skydeck offers 360-degree views from level 88.

End the day Without the Baggage Drama

Melbourne is much better when you’re not dragging your bag around the whole day. Be My Guest, is a Southern Cross Station luggage storage service that keeps things simple:
