Melbourne’s calendar has range: Formula 1 at Albert Park, long lunches at the Food & Wine Festival, and The Teskey Brothers at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. September and October 2026 bring Fringe, PAX, and the jazz festival into the mix. For a lighter hit to the travel budget, marathon spectating and the city’s New Year’s Eve Celebration Zones offer free admission.
The challenge is editing the guest list for your own itinerary. These ten Melbourne events span sport, food, film, comedy, and music, with the details to help you choose what’s worth dressing up, staying out, or clearing an afternoon for. Flying home afterwards? Give luggage collection and the airport journey their own space in the schedule.
1. Australian Open

The Australian Open’s 2027 schedule separates Opening Week from the main tournament, with day and night session options. Match your travel dates to the stage you want to attend; the two periods offer different tournament experiences.
Opening Week is 11–16 January 2027, while the main tournament is from 17–31 January.
2. Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix

Albert Park hosts Melbourne’s Formula 1 race. The organiser separates Park Pass, grandstand, and hospitality options, so decide what kind of viewing experience matters. For motorsport fans this is the ultimate main outing.
It’s expected to take place in late March or early April 2027 at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne.
3. Melbourne Food & Wine Festival

Build this outing around something you’re excited to eat. The 2026 programme included a Greek-themed World’s Longest Lunch at Kings Domain and a Cake Picnic. Choose between a planned meal and a particular food obsession. One considered booking can be enough.
Planning for 2027 is underway and is set for 5 March to 21 March.
4. Melbourne International Comedy Festival

With Melbourne Town Hall and nearby precincts forming a festival hub, this is an opportunity to sample local and international comedy. The mix extends beyond stand-up to cabaret, theatre, and street performance. For overseas visitors, a visual performance may suit the group better than spoken wordplay.
The next confirmed dates are 24 March to 18 April 2027.
5. Melbourne International Film Festival

MIFF brings Australian and international cinema into the same programme, alongside strands such as MIFF Talks and Food & Film. Choose it for a closer look at filmmaking or a title outside your usual viewing habits.
In 2027, it’s set to take place from August 5 to August 22.
6. Melbourne Fringe Festival

Fringe rewards a little curiosity, with theatre, circus, comedy, and other performances across the city. In 2026, Joel Bray Dance’s Dhandha/Campfire at Fed Square invites visitors to gather around dance and music. For a seated introduction to the programme, the opening-night gala at The Capitol offers a 90-minute selection of performances.
This will be happening from 29 September to 18 October 2026.
7. PAX Aus

For visitors comparing Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre events, PAX Aus is a clear choice for gaming. Try publisher demos, explore independent titles at PAX Rising, or borrow a board game from the tabletop library. It’s perfect for visitors who want to play and participate.
PAX Aus happens on 9 to 11 October 2026, MCEC, South Wharf.
8. Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival

You don’t need to enter a race to enjoy the occasion. Saturday’s programme includes 3 km, 5 km, and 10 km events; Sunday brings the half marathon and marathon. The finish inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground gives supporters a specific destination, while runners can choose a distance suited to their preparation. The City of Melbourne’s marathon listing confirms free spectator entry. This event will take place form 10 to 11 October 2026.
9. Melbourne International Jazz Festival

If you’re choosing music events in Melbourne, the jazz festival reaches into soul, funk, and blues too. On 17 October 2026, The Teskey Brothers headline Jazz at the Bowl at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The wider programme includes The JazzLab and Melbourne Recital Centre, giving you different settings to consider. Pick the Bowl for that outdoor bill, or explore the club and concert-hall programme for another setting.
Take part in this event from 16 to 25 October 2026.
10. Melbourne’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations

For free events in Melbourne, the city’s New Year’s Eve Celebration Zones offer an alternative to booking a restaurant or private party on December 31st. The official New Year’s Eve guide has the details, with more announcements still to come.
